'Margaret', 1879

Categories:   South Coast Shipwrecks

The ketch ‘Margaret’ was on voyage from Shoalhaven to Sydney with a cargo of timber and a crew of three, when she was lost in a storm off Black Point, Gerringong, on 28th December 1879.

‘Margaret’ was caught in a squall that sprang up about 4.30pm. Her sails were blown to shreds and her rudder was carried away. An attempt was made to steer the vessel with a long oar, but eventually the crew had to abandon her, and she rapidly drifted on to rocks where she was totally wrecked.

In attempting to land on Weir's Beach, the dinghy carrying the crew capsized and overturned on top of the three who had been on board.
