South Coast NSW History Story
‘Mary’, 1874
Around this time, ships were so frequently being lost that the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ had a regular ‘Wrecks’ section in its shipping news section. All that was reported (SMH, 13th February 1874) about the loss of the ‘Mary’ – which, in reality, was ‘just another’ shipwreck in Wreck Bay - was:
‘The schooner ‘Mary’, of and from Melbourne, bound to Newcastle, was totally lost in Wreck Bay on the 8th February, during a heavy southerly gale. All hands saved.’
Mary Cove, one of the small beaches in Wreck Bay, is named after the vessel.
