‘Rose of Australia’, 1874

Categories:   South Coast Shipwrecks

On 22nd January 1874, ‘Rose of Australia’ (a 30-metre, 262-ton wooden brigantine built in England in 1862) was on voyage from Melbourne to Sydney with 3 passengers (a Mrs Desborough and her two children) and a crew of 8, when she was ran aground and was wrecked in Wreck Bay.

It was 11pm. All on board ‘got on shore by means of lines from the wrecked vessel, and are now stopping at the lighthouse. Nothing of importance has been saved.’
