‘Susan’, 1849

Categories:   South Coast Shipwrecks

The ‘Susan’ was a 35-foot, two-masted schooner that had been built in 1840 on the Hawkesbury River. On 3rd July 1849, she was wrecked on the south bombora of Ulladulla Reef.

‘The Shipping Gazette and Sydney General Trade List’ of 14th July 1849 records how this occurred:

‘Intelligence has been received in Sydney of the total loss of the schooner Susan, 23 tons, Pulman, master and owner, on her passage from the Bermagui River, with cargo of tallow and hides. It appears, that at three o'clock on the morning of the 3rd instant, the wind being from the north-west, the captain hugged the shore too close, and consequently struck on Ulladulla Reef; within ten minutes after which the vessel went to pieces. There were seven passengers on board, all of whom we are happy to say were saved, together with the crew.’
