‘Susan’, 1853

Categories:   South Coast Shipwrecks

The ‘Susan’ was a wooden ketch of 27-tons and 14-metres in length that was built on the Hawkesbury River in 1851. She was on a voyage from Broulee to the Shoalhaven on 11th July 1853 with a cargo of wheat when she went ashore ‘during a heavy gale’ at Crookhaven. It was reported ‘nothing of value has come on shore excepting the small boat (slightly damaged), a water cask, a scuttle butt (the nautical term for the cask used to serve water), and meat tub.’ The two people on board perished.
