South Coast NSW History Story
‘Vision’, 1858
The ‘Vision’ was a 15-metre, 42-ton ketch, built at the Williams River in 1851.
It was destroyed on the bar of the Pambula River on 4th October 1858. There was no loss of life.
It appears the ship’s regular Master, a Mr Gaunson, had a falling out with the owner, George Brassington, and his wife. After a voyage to Sydney, Gaunson left and the Brassingtons sailed the vessel back to Pambula. It carried building materials for 'Mr Bransby's New Inn' (now the Bega Pioneers’ Museum building). The cargo was landed safely. But then George Brassington is reputed to have set fire to the ‘Vision’ which was burnt to the water line. (Brassington's obituary indicates the vessel was 'wrecked' at the entrance to the river; this may have been the case, the fire then being the means of disposing of the wreckage.)
