‘William Bowness’, 1856
The ‘Hobarton Mercury’ of 10th November 1856 included these details about the wreck of the ‘William Bowness’ on 22nd October 1856:
‘Wreck of the William Bowness. Information has come to hand by the City of Sydney, that the barque William Bowness, Captain Marshall, went ashore inside Twofold Bay, under the Tower (presumably this is referring to Boyd’s Tower), on Wednesday last, during a thick fog, and became a total wreck. She sailed from Newcastle on the 19th instant, bound to Melbourne, with 320 tons of coals. The wreck has been purchased by Mr. Solomon, of Eden. All hands were saved.’
